These are the most frequent emergencies in the dental field:
We will try to briefly summarize the most frequent reasons why patients demand an emergency dentist.
DENTAL PAIN:
This is the most frequent reason to seek an EMERGENCY DENTIST. There are multiple causes that can produce dental pain, the most typical one being cavities. There are multiple causes that can cause dental pain, the most typical being dental caries.
In the early stages, when the cavity is SMALL, the pain may be mild and it can also appear when you eat cold or sweet foods But the moment it begins to GROW in size, the pain usually increaseswith the aforementioned stimuli.
When the cavity reaches the nerve, the pain becomes constant and not even anti-inflammatories calm it down. t feels like the tooth has grown and you can not even bite. If it gets even worse, you might experience what is known as an ABSCESS (swelling of the face).
In the early stages, normally a filling will be enough to solve the pain, but in the later stages, more invasive treatments such as root canals and even EXTRACTION will be necessary.
The cause of dental pain is not always a cavity, there are multiple pathologies that may have the same symptoms:
- + Periodontal disease.
- + Dental fractures.
- + Sinusitis.
PAIN IN AN IMPLANT:
These types of symptoms are distinctive of some type of inflammation or infection of the gum or bone surrounding the implant.
The most common problem that we find with implants is that many times we DO NOT FEEL PAIN until it is too late to treat it.
If you perceive the gum of your implant inflamed, swollen or puscomes out, go to your emergency dentist as soon as possible. The EARLIER the problem is treated, the more likely you are to solve it.
BLEEDING GUMS:
It is usually the second most frequent reason for going to the emergency dentist. It is usually the second most frequent reason for going to the emergency dentist. Bleeding gums can be caused by many factors but, without a doubt, the most common is the presence of BACTERIAL PLAQUE.
How long has it been since you got a dental cleaning? Do you smoke? Do you have family members who have already suffered from periodontitis? BEWARE, you may be suffering from periodontal disease.
But what is periodontal disease? It is the disease of the supporting tissues of the tooth: gum and bone. It causes destruction of both. IT HAS TREATMENT, but you should go to your dentist as soon as possible to diagnose it and receive appropriate treatment for the case.
BROKEN TOOTH:
It is usually more common in children, but it also occurs in adults. The prognosis of your tooth will depend on the amount of the tooth that has been fractured and how long it has been since the accident occurred.
- + The SMALLER the piece, the EASIER the repair.
- + The EARLIER you go to the dentist, the more chances to SAVE IT.
It is a topic that WE ARE PASSIONATE about in the clinic and we have made several guides on what to do if a tooth breaks or comes out after an accident (fall, punch, etc…):
- + How to avoid bumps on milk teeth?
- + What to do if a tooth is broken or falls out
- + Guide to save your tooth in case it breaks
ULCERS, SPOTS OR LUMPS ON THE GUM, TONGUE OR NECK:
They are infrequent but they tend to worry patients a lot. Normally they are usually of traumatic origin: burning with some food or rubbing against something hard, and they disappear in a few days.
But it is always important to monitor them, even examine them and send them to the laboratory for biopsy.
Our specialist in the matter is Dra. Sara Blanco Sanfrutos ⚕️MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEON at the Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza.
